The French doctor who accidentally discovered that copper kept cholera away
Paris, 1852: a doctor notices something strange among copper foundry workers during a cholera epidemic. The story of Victor Burq and his years-long investigation.
Paris, early 1850s. The city is being ravaged by cholera outbreaks claiming thousands of lives, a disease doctors at the time didn't yet understand, let alone know how to prevent. Amid that fear, a French doctor named Victor Burq notices something no one else had, something so strange he would spend more than fifteen years of his life trying to explain it.

A strange silence in the death tolls
Burq studied the hospital registers of the cholera outbreaks of 1832, 1849 and 1852 and stumbled upon something striking. At a copper smelter in the third arrondissement of Paris, a factory that, according to his own notes, was in poor condition and where hygiene left much to be desired, the roughly two hundred men working there had been almost entirely spared during all those outbreaks. He saw the same pattern among the four hundred to five hundred copperworkers working further down the same street. While the disease raged around them, the people who worked with copper in their hands all day remained strikingly unaffected, despite otherwise far from healthy working conditions.
During the severe epidemic of 1854 and 1855, Burq went a step further. He specifically searched for deaths among jewellers, goldsmiths and tinkers in the city, professions in which people handled copper and copper alloys daily. He didn't find a single one.
A fifteen-year investigation
For Burq, this was no longer coincidence, but a pattern that deserved an explanation. He set out on what would eventually become one of the most extensive medical field studies of his time. He visited more than four hundred businesses in Paris, compared the health of workers who did and didn't come into contact with copper, and eventually gathered data on more than two hundred thousand people, not only in France, but also in England, Sweden and Russia.
Again and again, he saw the same picture: people who worked with copper professionally were strikingly often spared during cholera outbreaks. By 1867, Burq was confident enough to present his findings to the French Academies, the highest scientific forum France had at the time. His conclusion: copper and copper alloys on the skin appeared to protect people against cholera.
Ahead of his time
What Burq couldn't have known at the time is exactly what laboratories would be able to demonstrate a century and a half later. Burq drew his conclusions with the tools of his time: no microscopes to see viruses, no controlled laboratory trials as we know them now, but sharp observation and persistent fieldwork. Historians have since critically examined his methodology, as science should. But the core of what he saw is confirmed time and again in modern research on copper and cholera.
