Why copper works

Kills bacteria on contact

Changes the water it touches

A mineral your body needs

Long used for skin and recovery

This is what you unpack (Kopero Copper Water Bottle)

This is what you unpack

Box, velvet pouch and the bottle itself. The smooth finish gives one continuous reflection over the full height, from base to cap.

Fits the side pocket of a backpack (Kopero Copper Water Bottle)

Fits the side pocket of a backpack

Seven centimetres across and a loop on the cap: the bottle sits in the side mesh and comes out again with one hand.

What you actually get

This bottle is made for one habit: fill it with still water in the evening, let it stand overnight, and drink it first thing the next morning. In Ayurveda that is called tamra jal, copper water, and there it is not an afterthought but the fixed opening of the day. Where the tradition comes from, and what can reasonably be said about it, is set out in the article on tamra jal.

Nine hundred millilitres is a deliberate size: enough for a full morning portion with a second glass after it, and still a bottle that fits in a bag. It stands upright on a desk, fits beside a bed, and opens with one hand.

You choose between smooth and hammered. Smooth gives an even surface that reflects the light in a single plane. Hammered is worked by hand, so every piece has its own pattern of dents that breaks the light. The copper underneath is the same either way.

What to watch out for

Still water goes in, and nothing else. Carbonated water, lemon juice, sports drinks and vinegar are acidic enough to dissolve copper faster; drink those from glass or stainless steel. How much you can sensibly drink from it per day, and why there is an upper limit, is covered in how often per day you should drink from a copper bottle.

The bottle is not dishwasher safe. Rinsing with warm water is usually enough, and a slice of lemon with salt brings the shine back now and then. The full routine is in the care article.

And it will darken. Uncoated copper reacts to air and moisture and grows darker over the weeks, sometimes with green or black patches. That is normal, it is reversible, and it is also the clearest proof that there is no lacquer over it. When discolouration does mean something, read why is my copper turning green or black.

Still weighing up copper, stainless steel and plastic? The material comparison puts the three side by side, including the points where copper loses.

What's included: Kopero Copper Water Bottle

How it arrives

You unpack a sturdy branded box with a Kopero card inside: the QR code on it takes you to the digital manual. A velvet pouch comes with it too, to keep things protected on the move or in the cupboard.

What makes this special

900 ml of solid copper

No coating and no plastic inner wall. RTC Laboratory in Moradabad measured 99.21 % copper and 0.75 % zinc; this small amount of zinc is part of the casting process.

Screw cap with carry handle

The rubber ring in the lid seals the bottle watertight. Hand-tight is enough; the handle lies flat against the lid when you're not using it.

Independently tested for food safety

URS Products and Testing tested the bottle to European food safety standards: both the migration and odour/taste tests passed, none of the 19 heavy metals tested for were found. Read the full study under What does research say about copper?

Smooth or hammered

Only the surface differs. Smooth gives a calm, mirror-like surface; hammered is hand-worked into a lively pattern of small facets.

A colour change that comes with pure copper

Solid copper changes colour a little on its own as you use the bottle. That's completely normal, and even a sign of pure, uncoated copper. If you prefer the shine, simply polish the bottle with lemon and salt. Exactly how is in the care guide.

Composition
0,00%
copper

99.21% copper, measured independently

The material is analysed by RTC Laboratory in Moradabad, a NABL-accredited lab, tested to ASTM-1621 and IS-228. The measurement came out at 99.21% copper and 0.75% zinc. That zinc is not an additive but a residue of the casting process: it makes the copper marginally stronger and changes nothing else. Food safety is covered by a second report, from URS Products and Testing, tested against EC 1935/2004, EU 10/2011 and REACH.

The water bottle, from cap to pouch

A generous copper bottle for your daily water ritual, rounded off with thoughtful details for home and on the go.

The bottle holds 900 ml: enough to take your copper water ritual with you when you're out. RTC Laboratory also measured 99.21% copper and 0.75% zinc; this zinc comes from the casting process and isn't an added extra.

The metal lever rotates with your movement and lies flat against the cap when you don't need it.

The included felt base protects the bottom of the bottle and the surface underneath.

The soft pouch keeps the bottle safe while you carry it with you.

URS Products and Testing tested the bottle to European food safety standards; both the migration and odour/taste tests passed, none of the 19 heavy metals tested for were detected.

Settled in, in six steps

From the first clean to your steady water ritual. Rinse, fill, leave it overnight: there is not much more to it.

  1. 1

    Clean the bottle first

Before first use, rub the inside and outside with lemon and salt. Rinse thoroughly with warm water afterwards and leave it open to air dry.

  2. 2

Fill it with still drinking water

Just water. No juice, tea, coffee, fizzy drinks or alcohol, and no acidic drinks.

  3. 3

    Screw the cap on loosely

The rubber ring in the cap seals the bottle watertight. Hand-tight is enough; over-tightening damages the ring.

  4. 4

    Let the water rest

Fill the bottle in the evening and drink the water the next morning. Count on four to eight hours and drink it within 24 hours.

  5. 5

Rinse it out after every use

Warm water is enough. Then leave the bottle open so the inside can dry.

  6. 6

Polish it when the shine fades

Every one to two weeks with lemon and salt. Rinse thoroughly afterwards and dry the bottle right away.

Coming from Ayurveda I wanted to keep water in copper overnight. After a week I noticed my stomach starts the day calmer and I reach for coffee less quickly.

My partner thought I'd used filtered water. Nope, just tap water from this bottle. That says enough about the taste.

I taste no copper, but less chlorine. Room-temperature water in particular is suddenly enjoyable instead of bland.

Wow, even our limescale-heavy water goes down softly. My ordinary plastic bottle is only used for sports drinks now.

In Ayurveda copper water is often drunk in the morning. Now I get the appeal: it tastes mild and the moment itself calms me.

My skin feels less dry since I drink water more consistently. That could just as easily be the extra volume, but this bottle makes the habit easy. On holiday I used an ordinary bottle again and I missed the soft taste. Back home I started again straight away. For me the difference is mostly in the first sips of the ...

Ayurveda was my reason for buying a copper bottle. My mornings feel calmer and my digestion responds well to it. My own experience, of course.

My daughter keeps taking my 'nice water' because she thinks it tastes better. By now I have to hide the bottle if I want any myself.

Our water is quite hard. From the hammered bottle it feels much milder in the mouth, almost as if it were filtered.

My partner was dismissive about copper water. After a blind taste test they picked this water twice in a row. I'd set myself a month to test the bottle. After two weeks I already knew it was staying. It's now filled as standard before I go to bed.

Frequently asked questions about this product

Can I keep tea, coffee or juice in the bottle too?

No, only use the bottle for still drinking water. Acidic drinks like fruit juice, kombucha or lemon water attack the copper faster than water does, and fizzy drinks, alcohol and hot drinks aren't suited to solid, uncoated copper either. Brief contact with an acidic drink is fine, like when polishing with lemon, but storing one for hours is not.

How long can the water sit in the bottle?

For the traditional Tamra Jal ritual, count on four to eight hours: fill the bottle in the evening and drink the water the next morning. We wouldn't recommend leaving it longer than 24 hours. If the water smells or tastes different than usual, pour it out and clean the bottle again with lemon and salt before refilling it.

What's the difference between the smooth and the hammered finish?

Just the finish: copper, a 900 ml capacity and quality are identical for both. Smooth gives a calm, mirror-like surface; hammered is hand-worked into a pattern of small facets, which catches the light differently and gives the bottle a more handcrafted look.

Can the bottle go in the dishwasher?

No. The heat and detergent of a dishwasher attack solid copper and leave dull, uneven patches. Rinse the bottle by hand with warm water, dry it right away, and leave it open to air dry so the inside doesn't stay damp.

What if the bottle changes colour?

That's completely normal, and even a sign of pure, uncoated copper: the material changes with use. If you prefer the shine, simply polish the bottle with lemon and salt. Step by step instructions are in the care guide.

Not what you were after? No problem.

You have a 30-day right of return. Copper does take some getting used to: it tarnishes, it feels heavier in the hand than stainless steel, and now and then you will want to polish it. Give it a few weeks. If it is still not what you were after, send it back and get your money back.
